Montana State University surveys show weeds spreading more rapidly along the Gallatin River and around Big Sky than other parts of the state. Due to the threat, the U.S. Forest Service and the Gallatin County Weed District have identified Big Sky as a high priority for weed management. In addition, Yellowstone National Park identified weeds as the #1 threat to the Park’s health.

While agencies and groups like the local Gallatin/Big Sky Noxious Weed Committee are doing what they can to address the weeds, individual landowners and local citizens really make the difference. Landowners can: Become more educated about noxious weeds in their local area. Identify noxious weeds on their property when populations are small. Eradicate noxious weed populations when in the rosette stage (late spring to early summer) through hand-pulling and/or spray application. Plant desired vegetation where weeds are removed in order to discourage future invasions.

The Gallatin/Big Sky Noxious Weed Committee offers free on-site assistance to homeowners during weed season and can help determine the best management strategy. Contact the group’s coordinator, Jen Mohler, at 406-209-0905 or bigskyweeds@gmail.com for more information.

The more homeowners and local citizens take an active weed management role, the more we can stop the invasion. In addition, managing noxious weeds on your property not only protects the scenic beauty but it is also required by Montana state law.
